Indigenous Tourism

Williams Lake is situated on the ancestral territory of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) nation. The area, traditionally known as Columneetza, which translates to “the meeting place,” has been a significant cultural and historical site for the T’exelcemc, or the Williams Lake First Nation people. Their presence and connection to this land date back over 6,500 years, reflecting a deep-rooted history of community, tradition, and resilience. The T’exelcemc have long regarded this region as a central gathering place, rich in cultural significance and historical importance.

Reconciliation Statement:
The Williams Lake & District Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centre is dedicated to upholding the principles outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, with a particular focus on section 92, which advocates for economic reconciliation and capacity building for Indigenous peoples. We view this as an ongoing journey grounded in respect, with the goal of fostering mutual understanding, collaboration, and authentic partnerships with Indigenous communities and peoples.
